It so happens that I am obsessed with symbols and semiotics, the signs and signals with which we navigate our various environments, including that of the world wide web and her arachnid offspring, social networks. Similarly am I enamored of all things lingual, language and its turns, puns, limericks, bends and behaviors across different straits. To the end of fashioning myself another tongue with which to explore the rigmarole of metaphors and other signifying sayings, I have created a Facebook application experiment that I hope others will join me in using. Wanted in New York: an Open Space

A highlight of my European tour, Michael Steger’s Open Space is a refreshing oasis for the unwanted artist. Open Space was host to the continuation of Al Paldrok’s Diverse Universe as the first “International Printer and Performance Festival” and took place on Berlin’s infamous May 1st. Thousands of performers, protesters, party-goers and arts patrons descended on Berlin’s Kreuzberg, making for an insane spectacle that I cannot believe I survived!

Give us artists some health insurance!

In my floor acrobatics class on Friday, a classmate of mine was suddenly injured while practicing a front-handspring. She landed improperly and twisted her knee. A row of students away, I heard her scream, “[Expletive]” over and over as she rolled on the ground in agony. All activity in the gymnasium came to a halt. Precocious child-gymnasts prepping for the Olympics swiveled their heads. (more…)
